Comfy 1 (formerly Creative Comfort Co.), Manufacturer of Durable, Practical Furniture since l970
We make comfortable, heavy-duty sofas, loveseats, chairs and sectionals with exposed wood or fully-upholstered frames. Many of our sofa sizes are compact, but we also offer larger sizes. All are relatively easy to slipcover. Our standard cushioning is medium firm, but we also offer softer and firmer options. This durable, practical wood furniture is ideal for family room, casual or contemporary living room, sun room, office, dormitory, fraternity house, student lounge, teen center, or any room where sturdy sofas and chairs are needed for hard use.
Our fully-upholstered model has a cushy look that hides a sturdily-constructed hardwood frame, mostly of solid oak, along with cushioning and suspensions that are heavy-duty but also comfortable. All of our furniture is available in a huge selection of colorful or neutral heavy-duty fabrics.

Extra-Durable Oak Wood Sofa Frames, either
solid oak or mostly solid and partly veneer, are also included in
our line.
The edges and corners of the wood are rounded, and a smooth,
durable polyurethane finish protects the surfaces. The arm tops
can be either padded or exposed-hardwood, or they can be exposed
wood with a removable padded arm rest, depending on which model
and options you choose. If the arms are covered, those covers
(like the zippered cushion covers) are relatively easy and
inexpensive to replace, with velcro where fastening is needed. We
offer a wide selection of heavy-duty fabrics. However, there is
less need for a very durable fabric with this furniture, since it
is so practical regarding ability to replace the fabric.
Wood Arms or Padded Arms optional on each sofa, loveseat or
chair
In this set of four pictures, the one at the top left is an
80" sofa in our California model, shown with the optional
padded arm wraps. If you do without the padded arm wraps (or have
them but remove them when appropriate), the rounded-edge solid
hardwood arm tops are even more practical, and extra-durable.
(Pretty toss pillows to lean against the arms are widely
available and often inexpensive.) Various fabrics and wood
finishes can make this model go well in a casual family room,
contemporary living room, classy sun room, or office.
Top right: 83" Virginia model sofa with 31" back height. Note that the arms on this model are low (therefore are O.K. for a headrest). These arms are always padded, but the arm covers are relatively easy to replace. This model goes especially well in sunny rooms (especially family rooms), enclosed porches, second homes, and most rooms where a light, non-bulky, open look is desired.
Practicality & Heavy-duty Sofa Construction
Slipcovers are easy and fairly inexpensive to buy or make for
these sturdy sofas and loveseats. The oak frames, oak-reinforced
suspensions and special joinery of this furniture are extremely
durable, suited for decades of heavy-duty use. The Maryland model
(shown in second row above, on the left) is an updated version of
the 400 Series, which has seen heavy use in homes with active
kids and pets and in human services facilities since the early
l970's. We often hear from our customers who have this
decades-old furniture when they call to order replacement covers
or cushions. To see pictures of some of our furniture in
applications where it receives heavy use, click here. For
details on the construction of the hardwood frames, click here.
Long-term Economy: Neatly-fitting slipcovers for one of our three-seat sofas (sorry, they don't fit other companies' sofas) are $180-$210, complete, in 15 to 20 fabrics. If you know how much it costs to re-cover or reupholster ordinary sofas, and how often that would be needed in many cases, you can appreciate the long-term savings with this furniture. To see prices of the complete furniture, go to our companion web site by following the next link down (about five paragraphs down from here).
Medium Firm Support: The cushion filling is comfortable, very durable, and medium firm. (Softer or firmer cushions are optional.) People who like good support or who have difficulty getting up from ordinary furniture especially like the medium firm support of these sofas and loveseats.
Compact, Space-Saving Furniture: This furniture is only 32 1/2" or 33" deep (front-to-back distance), several inches less than most sofas in stores these days, yet it is still quite comfortable for most people. The difference is mainly in less bulky frames.
Sectionals in Custom Sizes Sectionals can be made in any of our designs, and in your choice of many sizes on each side. Our sectionals are especially popular with families and with people who have difficult-to-fit or large rooms to furnish.
Easy entry into almost any room: All models are easy to disassemble for moving. They are shipped or delivered in the form of components, mostly flat pieces, which are then easy to bolt together. So they can be gotten into almost any room, even if it's accessible only via a tight stairway.

About the Company:
Comfy 1 (previously called Creative Comfort Co.) was founded in
Cambridge, Massachusetts in l970. From the beginning, we
specialized in practical, comfortable seating. Outstanding
durability eventually came to be what really set our products
apart from the mass market furniture. The company grew to include
outlets in the New York area and Portland, Maine. In late l996
high costs and continuing layoffs in the Northeast, especially in
our Boston-area home base, inspired a move to the South. We now
avoid the high fixed costs of normal retailing by selling
directly to customers who visit our small showroom, as well as to
customers who order by telephone after receiving fabric swatches
in the mail. The founder and original owner, Don Meulenberg,
continues to manage the company and deal with customers.
